Discovery of a 2-player mode on Super Punch-Out!! 28 years after its release

It’s pretty crazy to think that secrets can still be discovered in classics, and this, 28 years following their release. A Twitter user has indeed just discovered that there is a two-player mode in Super Punch-Out on Super Nintendo.

Super Punch Out!! is the sequel to an NES classic released in 1987, in which we play a boxer named Little Mac, who will rise through the ranks by defeating several opponents. Each opponent has a particularity in his attacks and you will have to learn them by heart in order to overcome them.

Since 1994, we always believed that Super Punch-Out!! on Super Nintendo is a game made to be explored in solo. However, it seems that all this time there has been a semblance of a two-player mode, in which we can control our opponent with the second controller.

It’s super easy to play too

Twitter user Unlisted Cheats, who specializes in finding secrets in games, has just highlighted a key combination that can be performed to trigger this two-player mode. To achieve this, all you have to do is:

  • Go to game title screen
  • On player 2 controller, hold the R and Y buttons
  • With player 1’s controller, press A or START (while leaving the R and Y buttons pressed on controller 2)

We then access a new screen that allows us to select the opponent we want, among the 16 available in Super Punch-Out!!. Then just take the second controller once more, then press B+Y (and A or START on controller 1), which then allows you to take the place of the computer and face the first player with the second controller.

As this code has never been made public, while it also works on the Super Nintendo Classic Mini as well as the Nintendo Switch Online application, this suggests that it is a manipulation intended for developers, so that they can test possible bugs on the game.
