Have you ever dreamed of diving into a master painting? This summer in Toulouse, Van Gogh – The Immersive Experience gives its visitors the opportunity to live a total immersion in the work of the Dutch painter. From its premiere in a Naples cathedral (2018) Exhibition Hub has taken this experience to many cities, bringing together more than 5 million visitors.
Van Gogh – The Immersive Experience was voted Best New Experience immersive in the United States (USA Today) and recommended by CNN as “one of twelve must-see immersive exhibitions around the world.”
From floor to ceiling, we immerse ourselves in Van Gogh
This 360 degree artistic and digital experience invites visitors to immerse themselves in over 300 sketches, drawings and paintings by Van Gogh. An experience made possible by large-scale animated projections, from floor to ceiling, in a large projection area. So that the immersion is total, visitors also have the opportunity to experience a journey in virtual reality in a gallery
completely separate from the projection area.
“The exhibition allows visitors a sensory and emotional journey accompanying the life of the artist starting from his beginnings in the Netherlands, then to cross the influences of Impressionism in Paris, before the destination of the south of France, in Arles, towards the light and the colors of Provence…” say the organizers.
“A good introduction to the work of an artist”
“This experience presents itself as an impossible museumcapable of reviving art in the movements and vibrant colors of the Dutch paintera unique opportunity to see the complete and sometimes tormented work of the artist”we are told… In recent years, the debate has been lively around these immersive experiences, with some seeing them more as entertainment than an approach to art…
However, as pointed out Julia Luczak-Rougeaux (editor-in-chief at TOM-Travel) in Immersive experiences at the service of culture, “Immersion generates emotions that allow you to better retain the information that will have been provided. But you still have to receive it. These experiences are, in any case, a good introduction to the work of an artist, to the visit of a monument, to the enrichment of already existing content. They must not exist alone, but allow as many people as possible to access Culture.”
A fair balance between immersion and pedagogy
And this is what Van Gogh – The Immersive Experience which stands as a benchmark for the future of immersive experiences, notably using multiple technologies combined with more traditional approaches, inspired by museums. Offering the right balance between immersion and education, to create a new form of cultural entertainment.
On the technical side, the exhibition is made possible thanks to technology video mapping advanced, with the aim of “to create an experience that provides audiences with a new and intimate understanding of the Post-Impressionist genius and his work.” The animations were created in collaboration with more than 40 internationally renowned digital artists. They retrace the artistic career of Vincent Van Gogh and immerse the visitor in a selected selection of his greatest paintings.
The route of the exhibition includes an introductory partperformed in the Eye Gallery. Here the public can familiarize themselves with the life of Vincent Van Gogh, his permanence in France, major works of the intense artistic production which occupied the Dutch painter in the last ten years of his life. Philippe MORET On the theme of his room, Van Gogh makes three almost identical paintings
. The first, kept at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, was executed in October 1888 and damaged during a flood that occurred during the painter’s hospitalization in Arles. About a year later, the latter therefore undertook to make two copies: one, of the same size, is now kept at the Art Institute of Chicago; the other, that of the Musée d’Orsay, made for his family in Holland, is smaller in size. https://www.musee-orsay.fr/fr/oeuvres/la-chambre-de-van-gogh-arles-746 This experience is the result of a collaboration between the teams of Exhibition Hubet Fever .
