“Discovering the Rise and Challenges of the Christian Party through The Ministry of Interior with Nothomb in the 70s and 80s”

Little throwback. At the end of the 1970s, the Christian party was at the top of its late form. After the Nothomb presidency, the party resumed colors. Nothomb then returns to the Chamber. But this time climbs the stairs: he reaches the perch for the first time, in 79-80. Member of the European Parliament, he became Minister of Foreign Affairs.

He will give way to Léo Tindemans, on December 17, 1981. Because Martens V allows him to become Minister of the Interior. He will occupy the morocco until 1986. Deputy Prime Minister and also Minister of the Public Service, he will officiate in Liberal-Christian governments (unlike the previous governments where he officiated, namely Martens III/IV and Eyskens, with the Socialists ).

Not a walk in the park…

A Ministry of the Interior, which, he will admit to Pierre Bouillon du Soir in 2006, had rather the appearance of the Stations of the Cross: “There have never been tornadoes in Belgium: I was entitled to it. Never terrorism: I was entitled to it. Never a massacre in a stadium: I was entitled to it. Never an earthquake : I was entitled to it. It was only the Pope’s visit that did not pose a problem for me.”
