The United States is organized into 4 Regions and 9 Divisions, which include all the States of the Union.
THE REGIONS AND DIVISIONS OF THE UNITED STATES ARE COMMONLY USED IN MANY AREAS OF EVERYDAY LIFE.
The United States is a large country, specifically the third largest in the world by area. The country covers an area of 9.8 million square kilometers and has a population of 335 million.
The United States has 50 states: 48 contiguous states, the federal capital district (Washington DC), and the two non-contiguous states of Hawaii and Alaska.
Traditionally, the United States has been divided into regions that are used for everything from reporting news regarding a particular region, to compiling statistics, to the US Census.
Precisely, the scheme of regions and divisions of the country, responds to the classification that the census bureau americana uses for its purposes. In this sense, the US is divided into four regions (demarcated by the numbers 1 to 4) and nine divisions (demarcated by the letters A to I).
1. Northeast (North East)
This region of the US includes the part of the country that borders Canada to the north, the South Region to the south, the Midwest to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The regions cover a total area of almost 470,000 square kilometers.
The cultural identity of the Northeast varies significantly in different areas and it is the most multicultural region of the country with the highest rates of immigration. It is also the most economically prosperous part of the United States. It has a population of regarding 58 million inhabitants.

A. New England (New England)
One of the two divisions of the Northeast, New England includes the six US states of Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. The boundaries of New England are defined by Canada to the north, Long Island to the south, New York to the west, and the Atlantic to the east and southeast.
The total area of the region is 186,447 square kilometers and has a population of 15,116,205 people.
B. Mid-Atlantic (mid atlantic)
Only three US states, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey, belong to the Mid-Atlantic Region. The Mid-Atlantic states are known for their ethnic diversity and religious pluralism. The city of New York, a city of international fame, is located here and serves as an icon of economic power and American modernity. This is one of the most prosperous parts of the country with people having high per capita income and enjoying a high standard of living.
2. Midwest (Midwest)
The Midwest thus occupies the north-central area of the country.
The population of this region was 68,985,454 in 2020. Chicago is the most populous city in this region and the main financial center. With the Midwest having some of the best farmland in the US, agriculture fuels the region’s local economy and creates thousands of jobs. The Midwest encompasses twelve states and is further subdivided into two divisions, the North East Central States and the North West Central States.
C. East North Central States (Northeast Center)
The Midwest is part of the Great Lakes region and includes the five US states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.
The area is home to a total area of 774,800 square kilometers and a population of regarding 48 million people.
Two of the largest ports in the United States, Detroit and Chicago, are in the Mid-Northeast of the United States. The latter is also the most populated city in this area. The most populous state in the North Central East division of States is Illinois, while Wisconsin is the least populous.
D. West North Central States (Northwest Center)
Seven states comprise this division of the US These include South and North Dakota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Minnesota.
These states are considered the major “farm belt” states of the United States. The region has the lowest unemployment rate among all divisions in the country.
The population of this area was 21,616,921 in 2020 and the total area is 1,315,490 square kilometers.
3. South (On)
The Southern Region of the United States is often known as Dixie and it is the most populated in the entire country, with 126,266,107 inhabitants.
African Americans make up a large part of the population and the region is historically known for the slavery that prevailed in it and the racially discriminatory practices that occurred in its states for many years.
Although the South relied heavily on agriculture in the past and had a large rural population, it is now one of the highly developed regions of the country and is attracting both national and international immigrants. Sixteen states (plus Washington DC) are included within this region.
E. South Atlantic (South Atlantic)
The federal district (District of Columbia) and eight US states are included in this division. These states are West Virginia, Georgia, Virginia, South and North Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, and Florida.
Its population is 64 million people.
F. East South Central (Center Southeast)
This division of the US constitutes the states of Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Kentucky.
The population of the area is 19,176,181 people and it has a total area of 475,013 km2. Alabama is the most populous state in this division and Memphis in Tennessee is the largest city in the Central Southeast states.
G. West South Central (Southwest Center)
Four US states belong to the Central Southwest, and they are Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Texas is the largest of these states, accounting for regarding 80% of the division’s total population.
4. West (West)
The West in the US was the last area to be settled and is therefore known as Far West. Before 1800, the top of the Appalachian Mountains was considered the western frontier of the United States. But the border moved west, and eventually the lands west of the Mississippi River were considered the American West.
The largest number of minorities in the country are found in the Western Region. This US region is divided into two main divisions, the Mountain and Pacific regions, and encompasses 13 states, including Hawaii and Alaska.
H. Mountain (Mountains)
The Mountainous West division includes eight US states grouped into the two regions of the Northwest and Southwest. The former includes Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, while the latter includes New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and Colorado. These states are the most mountainous states in the country and have the highest average elevation in the entire United States.
Most of the states within this division observe Mountain Time. The Mountain division features high mountains, vast deserts, and vast plains. Semi-arid to arid climate prevails in most areas and alpine climate prevails on the higher slopes of the area’s mountains. With an average elevation of 2,070 meters, Colorado is the highest state in this US division.
I. Pacific (Peaceful)
The Pacific States division includes the states of Oregon, Hawaii, Alaska, California, and Washington, and they are the only states that have a coastline on the Pacific Ocean.
The total area covered by this division is 2,615,080 square kilometers and the population is 53,669,422 as of the 2020 Census.
