Viruses can trigger autoimmune diseases. Last but not least, many Covid-19 sufferers had to experience this themselves with long-term consequences. In the case of multiple sclerosis (MS), experts have suspected a connection to the Epstein-Barr virus, which is particularly widespread, since at least the 1980s: around 98 percent of all people over 40 carry the virus. Of course, not everyone gets MS, and not all MS diseases can be traced back to this infection. But now a mechanism should have been clarified with which the viruses can trigger this autoimmune disease.
