Discovering the Key Brain Area for Self-Awareness and Physical Sense: The Anterior Precuneus

Neuroscientists discovered a small area of the brain that plays a key role in shaping our sense of our physical self. It is located between the cerebral hemispheres – in the anterior precuneus.

This lobe serves as the center of the brain system that collects and processes information about the location of the body in space, movement, sensations of muscles and joints.

To explore the limits of this system, scientists used data from almost 1,000 people, for whom they built maps of neural connections in the brain. They managed to establish exactly where the sensation of the physical body is formed.

The scientists also additionally conducted an experiment on several volunteers who were preparing for the surgical treatment of epileptic seizures that are not amenable to drugs.

They were injected with thin probe needles to find out which areas of the brain were active during seizures. In one of the patients, it was precisely the area of the anterior precuneus that generated them, and the person at that time felt depersonalization.
