Discovering the Architectural Gem: First Lady Jill Biden’s Visit to Medersa Ben Youssef in Marrakech

The First Lady of the United States of AmericaMme Jill Bidenwent on Sunday to the Medersa Ben Youssef. The opportunity to discover and appreciate this architectural gem steeped in history, located in the heart of theold Medina of Marrakech.

Upon her arrival, Mrs. Jill Biden was welcomed by the Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaidthe wali of the Marrakech-Safi region, governor of the prefecture of Marrakech, Karim Kassi-Lahlouthe president of the Municipal Council of Marrakech, Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouriand the President of the Regional Council, Sameer Koudar.

During his visit to the different spaces of this historic and educational institution, explanations were provided to the First Lady of the United States So historical and architectural site of rare beauty which stands as witness to a radiant stage in the secular history of the Kingdom.

Mme Jill Biden was also informed of the role as well as the missions devolved to this building as Center for Islamic Education and Learningfocusing primarily on quranic studies and the islamic sciences.

The Medersa Ben Youssef, whose architecture is a perfect illustration of Moroccan and Andalusian know-how, had served as a theological faculty and welcomed students from different regions of North Africa and elsewhere. Founded in 1565 during the reign of the Saadian Dynastyby Sultan Abdellah Al-Ghalib, la Medersa was named following the Marinid Sultan, Abou Al Hassan Ali Ibn Othman, also known as Ben Youssef, who reigned at the beginning of the 14th century.

In order to preserve and enhance this cultural and civilizational site rich in history, His Majesty King Mohammed VI launched in 2017 the restoration work from Medersa which, in the end, have greatly contributed to the enhancement of this emblematic monument. Aiming at consolidating and promoting the tourist vocation and the international dimension of the Ocher City, the restoration works were carried out by the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs as part of a program aimed at preserving the historical patrimony of the’old Medina of Marrakech.

This work bears witness to the constant commitment of His Majesty the King to preserve the cultural and civilizational heritage of imperial cities of moroccoand to allow Madrassahs to regain their former luster in the dissemination and promotion of the values ​​of tolerant Islam and the just medium.
