A young English student aged 22 presented herself at a clinic located in the suburbs of Manchester. Both of his ears were red and the slightest movement caused him unbearable pain. She mightn’t move her head due to the intensity of the pain – and when she brushed her hair, sharp pains would flare up and last for an hour.
The student continued medical visits for three months without success, before doctors specializing in Otorhinolaryngology discovered the surprise! Learn more.
Red ear syndrome: a rare condition!
Radiological investigations and blood tests show nothing abnormal: no inflammation in the hearing system. As the examinations do not make it possible to guide the diagnosis, the doctors who took care of the young woman concluded that the latter suffers from the syndrome ofred ear.
This is a rare condition characterized by episodic attacks of ear erythema accompanied by intense pain. Symptoms are caused by touch, heat or cold, stress, neck movements and brushing hair.
After the interrogation, the young woman explained that the symptoms were caused directly following drinking a glass of orange juice!
Is orange juice the culprit?
The pathophysiology of red ear syndrome remains unknown. Some scientific researchers believe this rare condition is linked to dysregulation of the sympathetic autonomic nervous systemwhich has the role of promoting biological processes such as blood pressure or heart rate without conscious effort.
Ear pain may be due to a sympathetic system reaction. Many factors can trigger this disease, but the case of this young patient is unique: stress, and her consumption… of orange juice!
After several consultations, the doctors believe that the problem came from the ethyl butanoatea flavoring used in the composition of fruity drinks, which is believed to be the cause of the woman’s condition.
Better stress management and changes to her diet allowed the patient to recover without medication. Since then, she has been doing very well.
