“Epifadin” is the name of the molecule with antibiotic effects that researchers have succeeded in extracting and isolating from the nasal microbiota. Their work was published in the journal Nature Microbiology. This molecule is present in the nose and produced by bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis. The role of epifadin is to fight once morest bacteria present in the nasal passages, but it can also act once morest those coming from elsewhere.
Staphylococcus aureus: lepifadin destroys bacteria
During their experiments, the scientists therefore wanted to check whether this molecule might be effective once morest other bacteria. To do this, they extracted it and isolated it from the nasal microbiota. Then, they tested its effectiveness on the bacteria Staphyloccocus aureus or staphylococcus aureus, which is increasingly resistant to antibiotic treatments. Results: Epifadin destroyed Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
Develop a new treatment using the molecule from the nose
“The development of new antibiotics has stagnated for decades,” says Andreas Peschel, one of the authors, in a communiqué. But we need it more than ever, because in recent years we have seen a rapid increase in the number of multidrug-resistant microbes around the world. It is difficult to control these infections and our reserve antibiotics no longer have as strong an effect. We urgently need new active substances and new treatment methods.”
Only problem: epifadine is only active for a few hours and is very difficult to handle. Before this molecule is used, scientists will therefore need to do further research to confirm its effectiveness. Ultimately, if clinical trials are conclusive, epifadine might therefore become a new antibiotic treatment once morest Staphylococcus aureus.
In 2015, there were 125,000 infections caused by multi-resistant bacteria according to Public Health France. This phenomenon, called “antibiotic resistance”, can be defined as the ineffectiveness of antibiotic treatment on the bacterial infection that it is supposed to target.
