TV CHRONICLE Nicole Kidman‘s new murder mystery is basically a third season of “Big Little Lies”, moved from the West Coast to the East Coast.
And so it is not a disapproval. “The Perfect Couple” does nothing new but is ridiculously entertaining.
Even when watching TV series every day and sometimes all day, it can be hard to know which titles will spread like wildfire and become hits.
Because it’s not always either the most striking high-quality productions or the most obvious audience pleasers.
But every now and then they appear, the ones that just don’t can fails and makes one want to loudly bellow “Remember where you read that first!” and “If this isn’t a success, I’ll eat my hat!”.
And now I have seen one. Netflix’s “The perfect couple”, in Swedish “Det perfekta paret”, is like a buffet of all kinds of deliciousness, made to be devoured in one sitting and then quickly recommended to everyone who can bear to listen.

Danish Susanne Bier has directedfollowing a murder mystery by Elin Hilderbrandwho usually writes about and also lives in the brutally gentrified vacation paradise of Nantucket south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and has made a name for herself as the “Queen of Beach Novels.”

And if I say this:
If “Big Little Lies”, “The White Lotus” and “Knives out” were to have a snake pit and forget the condoms, this is the glory that would peek out nine months later.
A small wonder of greedy rich Americans, coastal environments to die for, reprehensible personalities, dysfunctional relationships, dirty secrets and dark humor, with the uncrowned queen of miniseries Nicole Kidman in purely dangerous form.

So Nantucket is the sceneand when we first meet the immensely wealthy Winbury family, a wedding is to be arranged on the estate between middle son Benji (Billy Howle) and his Amelia (Eve Hewson). A completely ordinary young woman from simpler circumstances, who is heading straight into a hornet’s nest.

And the night before the wedding, one of the party is found dead in the water. Secrets and lies leak out in abundance and soon the local policeman Dan (Michael Beach) and the trippy, tart criminal Nikki (an absolutely superb Donna Lynne Champlin) treat more or less everyone as a suspect.

Was it the icy matriarch Greer (Kidman)? Or her unreliable husband Tag (Liev Schreiber)?
Was it the utterly insufferable eldest son Thomas (Jack Reynor)? Or his pregnant, rude but also quite funny wife Abby (Dakota Fanning)?
Was it the groom’s best man Shooter (Ishaan Khattar), that all the women in the house drool over? The aristocratic French wine bar Isabel (Isabelle Adjani)? The mysterious man harassing Greer on the phone?
Or perhaps the all-seeing, contemptuous maid Gosia (Irina Dubova)?

As I said, a lot is recognizable from other things. But when a series is this slick, it doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel, or fix things that aren’t broken.
I sipped “The Perfect Couple” like an ice-cold grog after a long day – and you will too.
It’s high-level gossip.
