Discovering District 7: Exploring the Upper West Side and Lincoln Square in Manhattan

New York City is divided into 5 “boroughs”: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island.

Each “borough” is divided into districts: 12 for Manhattan.

Finally, each district is itself divided into neighborhoods which you can see on the map.

The districts present a certain disparity and it is always interesting to compare them. The figures are available on the Official site of the city.

Today, we’re taking you to District 7, which includes the Upper West (“You’ve Got Mail”, “When Harry Met Sally”, “Rosemary Baby”) and Lincoln Square.

?It is one of the densest districts in Manhattan – like the Upper East Side – with 212,000 residents.

There are more women than men: ?‍?55% ?‍?44% with few young people between 5 and 25 years old. It’s quite surprising, moreover, because the curve rises sharply following 25 years.

Number of inhabitants born outside the United States: 23.6% (the American average is 11%).

White (Non-Hispanic) | 66% (We are in the average of the city)

Black (Non-Hispanic) | 6 %

Asian (Non-Hispanic) | 9 %

Other Race (Non-Hispanic) | 3 %

Hispanic (of any race) | 16 %

A slightly more mixed neighborhood than the Upper East Side

? It is one of the neighborhoods where its inhabitants are the oldest: 20.4% are over 65 years old.

? On a scale where 12 is the most violent district, the Upper West Side ranks 4, with 1,860 declared “major felonies” (crimes, violent attacks, rapes). The highest district has 4,538 and the lowest 1055.

?‍?75% of inhabitants over 25 have a higher education degree with a very low unemployment rate: 2%. 9% believe that they have a poor command of English.

? Number of public schools: 35. We are well above the average. If you have children to put in public school (for example PS84 which offers a “dual language” program), it’s here!

?Number of public libraries: 4

? Number of hospitals: 18. This is few compared to the Upper East Side (40!)

? Number of parks: 4. It’s very few, but Central Park is nearby.
