Archaeologists have discovered a small knife in Denmark with a runic inscription dating back almost two millennia. The museum organization Museum Odense announced on Monday that the inscription is completely unique and can be dated back to around the year 150. Runes from this period had only been discovered once before, in 1865 in Vimosen, west of Odense. Archaeologist Jakob Bonde explained that it is fair to say that the find is a once-in-a-century event.

Runic writing was used by the Germanic peoples and is the oldest known form of writing in Scandinavia. It was used extensively from the beginning of the era through the Viking Age to the late Middle Ages.

According to the museum, the knife was found among the remains of an urn grave at a small grave site east of Odense. The word “hirila” was carved on the blade, which means something like “small sword” in Proto-Nordic. It is impossible to say whether this was the name of the knife itself or its owner, the museum wrote. From February 2nd, the extremely rare find will be on display in a special exhibition at the Møntergården Museum in Denmark’s third largest city on the island of Funen.
