The study of genes helped the research team to find for the first time a relationship between the risk of developing glaucoma and autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis.

The researchers explained that this discovery will help to devise medicines that can be given to patients with glaucoma to prevent damage to the retina, according to Russia Today.

After announcing the results of this study, published in Nature Genetics, the total number of genes discovered so far is 312.
