As is often the case during this time of year, Christmas romances take over screens and televisions. News scout MG* also watched a Christmas film last weekend. He chose the film “How to Fall in Love by Christmas,” in which US actress Teri Hatcher plays the lead role.
In the film, an author has to write a column regarding falling in love before Christmas – something she doesn’t really believe in – and actually falls in love with her photographer.
“I noticed it straight away”
M. was amazed when, following regarding 50 minutes in the film, which actually takes place in New York, the main protagonist meets her photographer for a hot chocolate. Because: The opening scene shows a Christmas market near the lake. If you look closely, you can see that this is the “Wienachtsdorf” on Zurich’s Bellevue.
“I immediately noticed the ‘Wienachtsdorf’,” says M. – since he lives in Zurich himself, he is very familiar with the Christmas market on Sechseläutenplatz. “I then asked myself who sells such recordings and how they ended up in the film.”
Another detail that immediately caught the Zurich resident’s eye: “The ice rink, which is no longer part of the offering this year, was seen in the film. “So it must be an older recording,” the 36-year-old is certain.

Christmas market surprises and delights
The organizers of Zurich’s “Wienachtsdorf” are surprised and delighted by the unexpected appearance. “We are of course honored that our ‘Wienachtsdorf’ has achieved fame far beyond the borders of Switzerland,” says Katja Weber, co-founder and organizer. They were not informed regarding its use. “We would of course have been happy to receive a reference.”
Perhaps a more recent recording would have made it into the American film. Because Weber confirms that the shot in the film is of a “Vienna Village” from years gone by. “It was with a heavy heart that we had to give up the ice rink that can be seen in the film. “I can’t say exactly what year the scene is from,” says Weber.
Appearances in television productions are a great opportunity for the Christmas market. Weber reveals that the “Wienachtsdorf” can also be used as a filming location for a well-known Swiss production. “In 2024 we will also be seen on Swiss television.” Weber was particularly pleased that a news scout noticed the scene: “We are happy to have such loyal fans.”
