“Let’s not fall into the trap of easy caricatures. Wallonia is a land of talent that we cherish. It is also a land of excellence”, boasted the regional minister-president, Elio Di Rupo, on Wednesday, at the occasion of the traditional speech on the state of Wallonia before the parliament.
“The percentage of innovative companies there is higher than the European Union average, at 61% compared to 50%. There are a number of positive elements which should encourage us to continue the work, in the interest of our fellow citizens”, he added, admitting however that “there are still difficulties to overcome”.
Among these, unemployment and poverty continue to plague the region. “In 2018, before the formation of the government, the risk of poverty was 22%. By the end of 2022, it had fallen, by more than 4%, to reach 17.8%. Of course, this is still far too much. D “By 2030, the objective is to halve, compared to 2015, the number of Walloon men and women exposed to the risk of poverty or social exclusion”, underlined Mr Di Rupo.
Wallonia, the Chamber, Europe, something else… What will the “artist” Elio Di Rupo do in 2024?
“The fight once morest precariousness is an issue closely linked to employment. It is by increasing the professional skills of Walloon citizens, and especially the most precarious citizens, that we will reduce poverty. And that is why the government has decided to make the training policy THE priority of the recovery plan”, with the objective of reaching an employment rate of 75% in 2030, he added.
“But not everything can be translated into figures. We must mobilize and unite the living forces of Wallonia. This is all the work that is underway today with the social and environmental partners who have taken their responsibilities” , summed up Elio Di Rupo. “Let’s all continue together to feed the Walloon dynamic and amplify the movement”, he concluded.
