The M’Goun Unesco Geopark museum in Azilal reinforces the national network of museums. This museum space offers its visitors a wonderful journey through time, geography and the history of humanity as well as an immersion in the fantastic world of flora and fauna of the M’Goun Geopark.
A real gem, the Azilal Museum, located within the M’Goun Geopark, opens its doors to the public from Wednesday, June 21, announced the National Museum Foundation (FNM). “The opening of the Azilal museum makes a valuable contribution to the diversity of the museum panorama of the FNM, whose objective is to provide each region of Morocco with a museum and to highlight the M’Goun Geopark classified “Unesco global Geopark” since 2014”, indicates the FNM. It must be said that this building with its remarkable architecture invites visitors to embark on a journey through time, geography and history as well as an immersion in the fascinating world of flora and fauna.
It presents several exhibition spaces retracing the marvels of humanity, from the big bang to the animal kingdom, including the formation of the earth. Among the many treasures available to visitors, there are, notes the FNM, seven thematic centers devoted to the solar system, the origin of the universe and the tectonic and geological evolution which led to the formation of the Atlas Mountains.
The museum also exhibits a rich collection of minerals and artifacts from the archaeological sites present in the Geopark. It also highlights the architecture and the way of life of the local population. A huge starry dome houses the monumental skeleton of Atlasaurus Imelakei, a dinosaur measuring 17 meters, discovered in the territory of the M’Goun Geopark, as well as other specimens, in particular marine dinosaurs such as the Mosasaurus and the Zarafasaura.
With a laboratory and a space equipped with an enhanced virtual reality system as well as a 3D cinema room, this museum also aims to be a center for scientific research on themes of interest to the M Geopark. ‘Goun as well as a platform for education and awareness of young people and the general public on the importance of the exceptional geological, archaeological, paleontological and architectural heritage of this region of central Morocco. This beautiful museum space in Azilal was the subject of a partnership agreement in 2022 between the Béni Mellal-Khénifra regional council and the National Museums Foundation under which the Foundation takes charge of the management of the M geopark museum. ‘Goun and undertakes to safeguard its works, to enrich its collection and its geological and archaeological heritage and to ensure its national and international promotion.
