Two large frescoes, under the Devallée bridge and on the Notre-Dame footbridge, are the first two achievements of the “Tournai Unesco Experience” which aims to develop urban attractiveness within the UNESCO district, and more broadly in the city center of Tournai. . “These are positive projects, I see that people are talking regarding them and are 100% committed to this approach”, notes Anne-Marie Goemaere (Ideta agency). Alderman Sylvie Liétar (tourism and culture) abounds. “Users of the footbridge were annoyed when it was closed to pedestrians for a few days while the fresco was being painted; but how might we do otherwise? The vast majority of them were very positively surprised when they were able to access it once more, as well as the inhabitants of the neighborhood”.

The Brussels studio YESTERDAY coordinated the two projects, that of the footbridge carried out by Marine Nonamy, and that of the Devallée bridge which we owe to Hedi Baka, Wenc and other artists united within the collective “Les Îles mardi”.

After these frescoes, other interventions will follow by the end of the year. A play of lights and paintings under the vault of the arch in rue Massenet (that of the Mufim); An inlay of marble pieces which, on the Place de l’Évêché, will precisely project the shadow of the cathedral on the ground at certain times of the year, a scenography in the Janson district. And various lighting projects.

Before the sequence of bridges, another project, called “Design in Town”, ended with the installation of two yellow rabbits on Place Crombez on June 15th. These Instagrammable works, produced by the Brussels artist-designer Christophe Lorenz, constitute the latest intervention of this program recognized by Europe via Interreg, aiming both to raise public awareness of the variety of contemporary art and to give additional attractiveness to the city.
Laurent Gérard, the designer from Ollignies, author of the “400 bells” selfie terminal at the Quai Dumon, inaugurated the series in June 2021. Seven other works have been set up in Tournai since: the “vegetated benches” of the hyper center (down rue des Chapeliers), by Nicolas Destino; the “Fresco of the Merovigian kings”, rue du Sondart, by Lauraine Motti; “The Cube” or the arches, in Marvis (at the intersection of Avenue Bozière), by Nicolas Destino; “Elleiba” the giant bee, next to the Saint-Brice church, by Nick Ervinck; the “climbing puppets”, on a wall of the School of Arts, by Jean-Yves Bonnaudet and Bruno Magda; the “Game of Light”, at Luchet d’Antoing, by Antoine Sion; and “L’Envol”, Quai Taille-Pierre, by Laurent Gérard.
