Scientists have observed for the first time two million galaxies, “quasars” and distant stars, which will help create the most detailed three-dimensional map of the universe ever, which will increase our understanding of the universe and our galaxy, the “Milky Way”.
According to Russia Today, scientists used the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) to take thousands of pictures of the night sky. The team from Durham University observed spectra of extragalactic objects, decomposing light into different colors or wavelengths that reveal the expansion rate of the universe, as well as the physical properties of galaxies. The first batch of data for the study, 80 terabytes in size, comes from more than 3,500 exposures of the night sky taken over a six-month period.
