Discover the Toponym Proposals for the Three Municipalities: Vote for Your Preferred Name!

This Monday, local authorities unveiled the five proposals selected following a popular consultation which sparked strong creativity.

“Glooiingen”, “Heidemark”, “Mooigem”, “Pajottegem” and “Reinsberge”: these are the five toponyms proposed following a selective process, from 1,230 proposals made by residents, between June 27 and last September 15.

An initial sorting made it possible to rule out duplicates, offensive toponyms, those thrown around by jokers or names referring to only one of the municipalities. This left 400 unique entries. A jury per municipality was responsible for choosing a maximum of 20 names. This resulted in a list of 48 proposals. A single jury then selected the remaining quintet.

“Glooiingen” refers to the hilly landscape typical of the three municipalities; “Heidemark” is a portmanteau made up of the Kesterheide nature reserve, in Gooik, and the Marcq, a river which crosses Hérinnes and Gammerages; “Mooigem” translates the beauty of the region; “Pajottegem” refers to the natural region of Pajottenland; as for “Reinsberge”, it is the place where the three communes touch, as indicated on the Ferraris map (18th century).

From now on, every resident over the age of 16 can choose their preferred name, from November 1 to 15, on the website www.groeienomkleinteblijven.be or by filling out a form in libraries and community centers. The name with the most votes will be announced on December 14.
