Discover the Swiss Theater Days 2023: “EWS” and “The Game of Nibelungen” – two must-see shows in Friborg!

Until June 4, Friborg and its surroundings are hosting the tenth edition of the Swiss Theater Days. On the menu, meetings and selections of shows from here. We recommend two of them, German-speaking and brilliant: “EWS” and “The Game of Nibelungen”.

Boring Swiss politics? Whoever said that hasn’t seen the play “EWS”. EWS like Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf: the politician from Graubünden and above all the worst nightmare of a certain Christoph Blocher.

In 2007, his unexpected election to the Federal Council rhymes with the fall of the populist tribune of the UDC. We talked about a plot, called a putsch. She received insults, death threats. We tried to make her resign, accused of treason to her party the UDC. She also benefited, an extremely rare event, from a demonstration of support by Swiss women on the Federal Square. In short, the story of EWS is boiling hot, the ideal material for a play.

“EWS”, a theatrical UFO

Ten look-alikes of EWS parade on the stage. Mouse gray suit, the absolute non-look. A remark fuses, balanced in a tasty dialect. “She doesn’t drink alcohol. She’s as dry as a Christmas cookie saved for Easter.” For sure, “EWS” the piece is not a hagiography, a fan-loving portrait. Concocted at the Zurich theater Neumarkt by the duo Piet Baumgartner and Julia Reichert, “EWS” is a UFO. Just like its subject. We still can’t believe this election against all habits.

“EWS” the part, the politthriller as we say in good Swiss German, is breathless, funny, lively, caustic and regulated like a ballet with these Evelines who pass and replay this rare moment in Swiss history: a woman damns the pawn to a man in the race for power . Ok, that was with help behind the scenes, but still.

The Neumarkt Theater had already been at the origin of one of the great hits of German-speaking theatre: Urs Widmer’s “Top Dogs”, an acid portrait of the world of management. “EWS” is of the same caliber. Performed at the Neumarkt by the theater troupe, this production never runs in principle. The June 1 performance at Nuithonie is therefore exceptional. Do not miss it, in addition, it is given with subtitles.

“The Game of Nibelungen”, a confederal treat

Same agglomeration, Fribourg, another place. At the Cycle d’orientation du Belluard, a German course is given from June 1st to 3rd. “Normal”, you will say. Except that it’s a deliciously crazy German course. Laura Gambarini, an emeritus Neuchâtel actress from street entertainment and object theatre, has concocted with Manu Moser a revisited history of the Nibelungen, this Germanic equivalent (by importance) of the legend of the Knights of the Round Table, which has become, thanks to Richard Wagner the huge “Ring”, which itself inspired a certain “Lord of the Rings”…

Professor Zinzin, Laura Gambarini tells her story with many objects, tonic demonstrations and massacres of tubes and other containers. Yes, it’s in German, but you don’t need to know it to follow this story in a real laugh. “The Game of Nibelungen” has already been a hit in French-speaking classes as well as at the Festival d’Avignon. Here he is again on tour for a wider audience. Better, it is now exported to Germany, home of the Nibelungen, where we appreciate this way of German intended for non-German speakers.

In this delicious linguistic paradox, despite its English title, “The Game of Nibelungen” is undoubtedly one of the most Swiss and confederal shows in the selection of shows offered by the Swiss Theater Days. A delight.
