The duplex apartment is made up of two small living units that have been joined together. The lower floor houses Mlinarevic’s private space: a living room that overlooks the busy alley and a bedroom that opens onto a quiet, leafy interior courtyard. The upper floor, with an open kitchen, a dining area and a balcony, is also used by the 42-year-old host as a workshop: this is where he tests his new dishes, creates his recipes, hosts and kitchen for its guests and business partners.
During the renovation of this workshop located on the top floor, he endeavored to treat with the greatest care the historical substance of the building and to preserve the existing one, in a spirit ofupcyling. This gentle renovation has made it possible to preserve the unique character of the rooms, while meeting the requirements of contemporary living and working.

Admire the chef at work
Dressed in elegant shades of brown and gray, the new kitchen state of the art comes from the Swiss chef Orea. It might not be otherwise. Mlinarevic is not only one of Switzerland’s best-known chefs, but also one of the best and most innovative. He is part of a young generation of great chefs who are revisiting fine cuisine, according to the motto “eating can be a sophisticated pleasure, but should always be good.”

When Mlinarevic cooks at home for his friends and acquaintances, they benefit not only from his culinary delicacies, but also from his talents as a host: comfortably seated at the oval table, a model by Eero Saarinen from the 1960s, they can observe the great leader at work. “The island with hob and integrated extractor hood should connect the kitchen to the dining room and promote proximity with customers,” explains David Spielhofer, CEO and co-owner of Orea. “The entire design was adapted to the attic floor of this old building in Zurich. The kitchen plan takes into account the existing components of the room. The aim was to integrate all the kitchen elements in a reduced space and create a unique and high-quality dining experience”, explains Spielhofer.
“I like the understated, modern design and the warm, natural colors,” adds Mlinarevic. Its walls are all painted in harmonious tones. Even the new kitchen is perfectly matched to the color of this residence in the old town: facades veneered in “oak stone” with a raw finish, handles in black anodized aluminum and worktop in Meteora gray ceramic by Inalco. “All that’s missing is the right lighting,” adds the cook. Together with Andreas Schwarz, owner of furniture store Neumarkt 17, he decided on the light fixtures – three hanging lamps above the kitchen island – as well as the furniture and wall colors.
A self-cleaning oven
The kitchen is equipped with the latest generation household appliances from the manufacturer Miele. These fit perfectly into the design of the kitchen and enhance its contemporary and elegant look. “In fact, Miele products designed for home use are so professional that I’ve cooked with them in one of my pop-up restaurants,” says Mlinarevic. His favorites include the steam oven, as well as the auxiliary oven. “For me, it is very important to have two ovens. I use them almost every day.” The combi oven is also equipped with a camera that allows the great chef to follow the cooking of his dishes at any time, via his smartphone. Fiona Hefti, Nenad Mlinarevic’s new partner, has a passion for both cooking and baking. The question of who cleans the steam oven does not even arise, because the latter has a self-cleaning function.

Kitchen utensils with a contemporary design
The cook tells us that another of his favorite kitchen appliances is the Gourmet warming drawer: “It is very practical for preheating plates or keeping dishes warm. You might even cook in it at a low temperature, if you wanted to.” The wine cabinet is also one of his favorites. Located on the front face of the kitchen island, it is obvious as soon as you enter the attic. Equipped with three temperature zones, it keeps a few free places for good bottles. “The wine fridge always offers champagne, not to mention a few bottles of light red wine,” says Mlinarevic. What he likes most regarding Miele appliances is their functional and contemporary design as well as their practical and intuitive use. “A functional kitchen is essential for me,” explains the cook.

This trick allows you to ventilate the rooms
In accordance with the motto “less is more”, Mlinarevic’s house is furnished with restraint. “To make the small and low rooms, typical of apartments in the old town, seem more generous, we used very little furniture, but in generous formats – and we made sure that they did not rest directly on the ground, but on feet”, reveals Andreas Schwarz: “The room thus seems more airy”. Great respect was given to character, history and architecture, not only during the renovation, but also in the interior design of the new apartment – an attitude that fits with Mlinarevic’s culinary philosophy. His dishes also bear witness to honesty and respect for the products.
