Pauline Floymont and her husband decided to start growing asparagus in 2019. When they started, the couple cultivated 20 ares. From now on, its production amounts to 20 ares of green asparagus. He is even preparing to grow white asparagus. “It’s a very nice product that is in rather good demand. We decided to go for products that are not widely grown to try to stand out”underlines the farmer.

Walloon asparagus is available from mid-April to mid-June. “It’s true that the season is very short. Sometimes it’s frustrating for consumers“, constate Pauline Floymont.

Nearly 20 producers have therefore gathered in a group in order to make a place for themselves alongside asparagus imported from abroad. “Walloon asparagus grows in rich soil. We have heavy soils so the plant grows in soil full of humus. It does not grow in sand as we know it elsewhere. And so it benefits from the richness of our Walloon soils”says Grégoire Baert, farmer.

In stores, customers pay attention to provenance. “I love Mechelen asparagus, that’s where they are the best, I think”, whispers a buyer.

In total in Wallonia, the area covered by asparagus cultivation is estimated at 90 hectares.
