Santa Cruz (Bolivia): The Santa Cruz Departmental Legislative Assembly has given the religious, cultural and historical heritage status to the Church of San Lorenzo (St. Lawrence) in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Governor Luis Fernando Camacho made the announcement in this regard. San Lorenzo Minor Basilica, a metropolitan church with centuries of history, is the pride of the city. The bill proposing to give heritage status to the temple was passed by twenty one votes.
In declaring the Church of San Lorenzo as a heritage site, the representative of the Church, Santa Cruz Metropolitan Rene Leigu Cesari and Rector of the Basilica, Fr. Hugo Ara thanked the Departmental Legislative Assembly. Among all the churches in the South American continent, this church is highly regarded for its interior beauty.
The first church was built in the second half of the 16th century during the time of Francisco Toledo, the viceroy of Peru. Then in 1770, Francisco Herboso, the Bishop of Santa Cruz, rebuilt the church. The church was renovated in the first half of the 19th century and on August 18, 1915, it took on its present form. In 1988, Pope Saint John Paul II, who visited this place during his visit to Bolivia, gave the church the status of a minor basilica.
