Céline Bonnier, Marie-Joanne Boucher and Noémie O’Farrell burst onto the screen in the new series witcheswhich is coming to TVA on Monday with its aura of mystery and cinematographic quality.

The three actresses, friends and creators of the project portray strong women, all marked by their youth spent in a town with sectarian impulses led by their father.

The three half-sisters, who have not spoken to each other for 30 years, are characters at the height of their talent, as the QMI Agency was able to see on Wednesday during the viewing of the first two episodes.

Marie-Joanne Boucher stands out particularly at the start of the series. Her Elisabeth is a bored stay-at-home mom with her distant husband, Philippe (Patrick Drolet). There is a strong scene involving “Beth” with a bird and another, in a swimming pool, where her traumas from the past make waves. His character has a broad spectrum alternating between gloom and anger.

The eldest Joanne (Céline Bonnier), who was born outside the town, is a journalist and is interested in women’s rights all over the world. Alone in life and withdrawn, we meet her while she is on the ground, in China.

The youngest, Agnès (Noémie O’Farrell), is a life coach and a follower of microdoses of MDMA, among other things. Ambitious, she is at the head of her own holistic care center. She dreams of having a child with her girlfriend, Sophie (Lamia Benhacine).

The reunion between the three women and the rest of the community of Sainte-Piété, the village in Estrie where the town was located, is provoked by the discovery in the middle of the night of a naked baby in a wood. We wonder who might have left him there helpless – he is not dead – and who made the call to 911 by modifying his voice. This toddler serves as a spark plug for intrigue.

The authors Marie-Josée Ouellet and Germain Larochelle, who are currently working on the last five episodes of the first season with a collective of screenwriters, said they take pleasure in “untying” all the layers of intrigue and the multiple ramifications, at the same time in the present and in the past, where we make incursions thanks to flashbacks.

These memories are often traumatic and have been buried for a long time. The discovery of the baby and the investigation that begins, led by a new lieutenant of the SQ, Bastarache (Denis Marchand), bring back fragments of a difficult past among the three sisters, but also among the inhabitants of Sainte-Piété, including Luc (Stéphane Gagnon) and Mayor Roy (Julie Roussel).

“Magical Realism”

The production of the first episodes is ensured by Myriam Verreault, who speaks of the “greatest creative buzz of her career”, with this project which winks at the work of filmmaker David Lynch and generates “magical realism”. She shares the task of canning the 26 episodes of the first season with Ian Lagarde. Hats off, by the way, to the music by Fanny Bloom and Thomas Hébert as well as to the photography team.

TVA believes it has found a winning recipe by combining events, more often linked to heavy series, with the format of the annual series. So there are no pointy hats, magic wands or cooking pots here. witches rather refers to femininity, sisterhood and spirituality.

Amalga and Quebecor Content have the ambition to interest all family members in witches – especially the youngest who are fond of American platforms – and to take the series to other markets.

The first two episodes of witches airs Monday, September 11, at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.
