Every day, a personality invites herself into the world of Élodie Suigo. Today, the author, composer and performer, Yves Duteil. This Friday, May 12, 2023, he released “Writing path – The complete songs”. It will be on May 19 at the Folies Bergère in Paris.
Yves Duteil is a singer but also author, composer, former mayor without label of the commune of Précy-sur-Marne in Seine-et-Marne, from 1989 to 2014, commune in which the singer Barbara lived. For half a century, his voice has resonated in our families through his writing and his songs like take a child (1977), Dreyfus (1997), turns (1980), Our language (1985) that have accompanied our lives and the memories that go with them. This Friday, May 12, 2023, Yves Duteil comes out Writing path – The complete songs in a box of 16 CDs. A book also titled Write path was released by Éditions de l’Archipel on May 4th.
franceinfo: Inside this box, we discover your entire life. Does it affect you?
Yves Duteil: It touches me a lot because I see myself at the beginning. I imagine myself with my little squared notebook on my bed trying to write my first texts. My guitar with the first songs. And to think that 50 years later, we’re still here and we still have the same passion, the same freedom… It’s an incredible journey through time. I admit that I can’t believe it.
When does this passion for words start?
I think it was my mother who passed on this passion for words to me.

My mother was a crossword champion and when we ate at home, in the dining room, there was a small piece of furniture at the end of the table where there were lexicons. And when there was a word that popped up in the conversation, hop, she let her plate cool and she rushed towards the wall and gave us the etymology, the spelling, the origin of the word. I’ve always kept it like a treasure and today I realize that I carry it with me, like a legacy.
In any case, writing has allowed you to build yourself. I would like to talk regarding your first song I have long loved the earth which we discovered in 1969 for the Petit conservatoire de Mireille. Is there always emotion when you listen to these songs, which obviously bring back memories of your debut?
Yes. Because I always have my first songbooks in which I wrote like that, without knowing that I was going to do that all my life. And when I see this beginning and hear myself sing, there is already the seed of everything I lived following. And when I passed the audition, Mireille really preferred in all that I presented to her, the bossa. She made me sing this for my arrival and this is really my first public appearance.
There will be The writing desk in 1974 and this name will accompany you throughout your life with your wife. I have the impression that this is also what defines the man that you are. This loyalty.
I am two. That’s it. Alone, I might never have done all this. We took off when we realized that the profession of publisher was very vague. And there, in 1981, we decided to create Éditions de l’Écritoire, to produce our albums, to take the financial risk, to own the recordings and to develop this incredible story ourselves, this artistic adventure that will lasted until now.
Which is first a love story finally…
It’s a love story. In fact, Noëlle has made our life into a work of art. Literally.
How the song was born take a child ?
Its real story begins when everyone has appropriated it. I find it extraordinary that it has also become a song once morest child abuse. It was used for the white march following the death of Julie and Mélissa in Belgium. This is the song that was sung in Lebanon, in Beirut following a deadly attack by a truck bomb that drove into the barracks causing hundreds of victims, and what did the soldiers sing at Christmas in ‘After ? take a child.
Gentleness is a weapon, it is a weapon of massive seduction. It is a weapon that I have used extensively and for which I campaign enormously. This sweetness is a real strength.

What does this career represent for you?
The idea of being useful because when you write a song or songs, you can’t imagine that you are useful. We need to prove it to ourselves. When, thanks to Monique Lemarcy, who insisted that take a child was part of the panel of songs that was submitted to the public vote to be the most beautiful song of the century, the fact of having arrived at the top of this poll upset me and posed a problem for me. Am I the man of my songs? Am I able to assume in life the ideal that I defend through my songs? And little by little, I became more of a man of action, without leaving poetry. I said to myself: it’s incredible how much value poetry takes on when it’s rooted in reality. And that’s how, with Noëlle, we became mayor and deputy mayor of a village, that we got involved in associative actions, that we created a school in India, and so on. Things that we would never have imagined, but which were in fact the corollary of what I wrote in my songs. The usefulness of the writing was revealed because I had the choice between the pen and the action and I chose both.
Yves Duteil will perform on May 13, 2023 in Rethel, on the 19th in Paris and on September 30 in Marle.
