2023-04-30 04:00:00

The Meise botanical garden on the outskirts of Brussels is presented as one of the largest in the world: it covers 92 hectares. Spring is a busy time for gardeners. The opportunity for us to discover corners inaccessible to the public.

20,000 plant species united in a single domain. It is a universe of colors where calm and serenity reign. At the heart of this space, we discover a huge palace of plants: one hectare of greenhouses devoted to exotic species.

Xavier, the gardener of the greenhouse in the desert, agrees to show us an area that is forbidden to the public.

We discover hundreds of cacti, some with surprising shapes, sometimes with excessive spines and precious specimens, such as cacti “of the genus Lophophora, cacti which contain a substance called mescaline and which is used by shamans, therefore it is a drug”underlines Xavier.

Very small cacti, kept away from the public for security reasons. “There are people who know them very well and steal the plants, it’s happened several times already. They were stolen from us five or six times, so we said stop, now it’s over”adds Xavier.
