It is an emblematic place of Brussels. Built for the Universal Exhibition of 1910 at the request of King Leopold II, the imposing Hotel Astoria, in the heart of the capital, was designed by the architect Henri van Dievoet, the great-nephew of the famous Joseph Poelaert.

From the Japanese Emperor Hirohito via Winston Churchill, Eisenhower, the Shah of Persia, Adenauer, Ben Gurion, or even Salvador Dali, Marguerite Yourcenar and Gérard Philippe: the building has long served as a meeting place for crowned heads, artists and personalities from all over the world.

According to specialists, the Astoria in Brussels was even, like the Hotel Sacher in Vienna, the Ritz in Paris or the Negresco in Nice, among the legendary places of luxury hotels. Appeared, yes, because the building, located at numbers 101 and 103 rue Royale, has not opened its doors for 17 years.

125 rooms and suites

But the Astoria will be reborn from its ashes, if we are to believe its current owner, the Maltese luxury group, Corinthia Hotels, which bought the establishment in 2016. After several years of a “extensive redevelopment”, the new Astoria should thus reopen its doors next year at the latest.

The group did not give precise dates for the inauguration, but the moment is approaching if we are to believe the director of the future hotel, Edward Leenders, who posted this weekend photos on his Linkedin account evoking a opening soon (“coming soon”). When completed, the hotel will include 125 rooms and suites, as well as extensive banquet, catering and spa facilities.

According to the architecture studio, MA² of Francis Metzger, in charge of the renovation of the building, the five-star hotel will be placed in “a little-developed niche to date in Belgium, that of “charming palace” type hotels. The establishment should thus become the most luxurious in the capital. The price of the rooms remains a mystery. Recently, the RTBF mentioned prices ranging from 500 to 1,000 euros per night, without this being able to be confirmed by the Corinthia group.
