Scientists from Harvard University found that people who ate a more environmentally friendly diet were 25% less likely to die over a follow-up period of more than 30 years than those who ate a normal diet. Study results are presented at NUTRITION 2023, the American Society for Nutrition’s flagship annual meeting, and are considered preliminary pending publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

The scientists created the PHDI index to evaluate the health and sustainability of a product using existing research. They then applied the index to analyze the nutrition of more than 100,000 US residents.

The data was collected from 1986 to 2018. The environmental impact was assessed in terms of water use, land use, pollution by various substances and greenhouse gas emissions.

The authors of the study found that people on the diet with the highest PHDI score had a 25% lower risk of dying from any cause than those with the lowest. In addition, a healthy and environmentally friendly diet reduced the risk of death from cancer or cardiovascular disease by 15%, from neurodegenerative diseases by 20%, and from respiratory diseases by 50%.

Whole grains, fruits, non-starchy vegetables, nuts, and unsaturated oils are considered safe for both health and the environment. Eggs and red and processed meats can be harmful to the environment and human health.
