Today, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) is issuing new stamps and souvenir sheets on the theme of body, mind and soul.
When body, mind and soul are in harmony, one can expect good health, inner peace and joy.
The stamps represent the Chinese practices of Tai-chi-chuan, calligraphy and the guqin, a musical instrument.
These three practices have been recognized as elements of intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
Tai-chi-chuan, depicted on the 66-cent stamp and on the $1.50 plate, is a physical exercise characterized by circular, relaxed movements that help regulate breathing and cultivate an upright, neutral mind.
Chinese calligraphy, depicted on the 1.10 Swiss franc stamp and on the 2.30 Swiss franc plate, combines purely visual art with the interpretation of literary meaning.
The practice of the guqin, depicted on the 1 euro stamp and on the 1.90 euro plate, has existed for more than 3,000 years and is the symbol of China’s greatest tradition of solo musical instruments.
These three practices have been listed on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage lists in 2020, 2009 and 2008 respectively.
The stamps and plates were illustrated by Yun Zhang (China) and laid out by Rorie Katz (United Nations).
These stamps are available for sale on the site unstamps.org and in the shops located at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Geneva and Vienna, from where they can be used for postage.
