Four eras, four investigations, but only one corpse. With this original concept, on the border between thriller and science fiction, the new British series “Bodies” captivates despite a certain complexity. Currently watching on Netflix.
London, Whitechapel district where Jack the Ripper took place. The body of a naked man, shot in the left eye, is discovered. An investigation is open. So far, nothing exceptional to start a criminal story. Except that in “Bodies”, this initial sequence takes place in 1890, in 1941, in 2023 and finally in 2053. And if the periods are different, the body found is the same each time.
A single corpse, four different eras, that’s the original idea of the “Bodies” series. [Matt Towers – Netflix]New British fiction offered by Netflix and signed Paul Tomalin, “Bodies” is adapted from the DC Comics graphic novel by Si Spencer.
Collaborate over time
Carefully mixing historical thriller and science fiction, the series crosses four eras, which go from the Victorian era to a society of the future, governed by an autocrat called Elias Mannix (Stephen Graham) who might also have played a role in this(these) murder(s).
Unless a darker truth lies behind these events? To solve the mystery, the four investigators will have to collaborate in one way or another over time.
Societal issues
In eight episodes, the series certainly tells a criminal investigation which has the originality of taking place over 163 years, but also develops the personal stories of the four investigators played by Kyle Soller (“Andor”) in 1890, Jacob Fortune-Loyd (” The Queen’s Game”) in 1841, Amaka Okafor (“The Responder”) in 2023 and Shira Haas (“Unorthodox”) in 2053.
Men and women who are each part of a minority, due to their homosexuality, their religious affiliation, the color of their skin or their disability.

A very good start
Juggling from one period to another, “Bodies” may seem at first glance complicated to follow. “At the beginning, we fear getting lost a little in this rather complex mille-feuille. But despite these four temporal layers, the writing is clear. (…) All of this is laid out in a calm manner and therefore remains very accessible” , reassures critic Nicolas Dufour in the RTS series debate.
Since its release on Netflix on October 19, the series has received very positive initial reviews and remains at the top of the streaming platform’s rankings (currently number 2 in Switzerland). Breathtaking, brilliant and unique in its kind, “Bodies” seems well on its way to claiming a place among the best series of the year 2023.
