Even though Zurich is the friendliest city in all of Europe, Switzerland did not make it into the ten friendliest countries. This emerges from the Reader’s Choice Award 2023 from the travel magazine “Condé Nast Traveler”. We present the top ten.

10th place: Croatia with 91.78 points

Croatia beckons with its pristine beaches, shimmering lakes, ancient ruins, Michelin-starred restaurants, underwater wineries, vibrant nightlife – and last but not least, its warm hospitality towards travelers.

9th place: Malta with 91.92 points

The practical thing regarding Malta: the sea is never more than 20 minutes away. And the island also has a lot to offer, from ancient temples, dramatic cliffs and secret swimming coves to historic, winding streets, traditional shops and a bubbling creative scene. Apparently particularly hospitable people who also speak perfect English.

8th place: Denmark with 91.93 points

As the former center of the Viking Empire, Denmark is considered a link between the cultural and geographical differences of Northern Europe and Scandinavia. The perfect mix for a holiday stay.

7th place: Portugal with 92.32 points

Whether in big cities like Lisbon and Porto or in small, untouched places like the village of Marvão – Portugal is particularly known for its hospitality. This is expressed not least in local delicacies such as cod or the famous Pastel de Nata puff pastry tarts.

6th place: Norway with 92.50 points

Norway is considered a Nordic jewel full of natural wonders and coastal towns. Whether you’re looking for the Northern Lights, hiking to Preikestolen, taking a road trip on the Atlantic Road or exploring Oslo, Norwegians show off their country with pride.

5th place: Iceland with 92.91 points

The Icelanders are a particularly proud people and like to give travelers an insight into their country. From impressive mountain landscapes, black beaches, whale watching, natural pools and fermented foods – there is a lot to discover.

4th place: Scotland with 93.97 points

Whether you’re sipping whiskey in a cozy bar in Glasgow or meeting a hiking friend halfway up a cliff, chances are the locals will make time for a chat.

3rd place: Romania with 94.00 points

Romania is particularly known for its Gothic churches, medieval castles, picturesque towns – and of course Count Dracula and Transylvania. But contrary to all the horror stories, the locals greet you in a friendly and open manner, which is enough for third place in the ranking.

2nd place: Slovenia with 94.18 points

With its alpine forests, Disney-like castles, sparkling lakes and baroque architecture, Slovenia is worth the trip. The nation is particularly proud of its sustainable lifestyle and enjoys sharing its green kingdom with visitors.

1st place: Ireland with 94.50 points

Why the people of Ireland have been named among the most hospitable in Europe? Nobody knows the secret recipe, but perhaps it is due to the traditional breweries and the lively atmosphere in Dublin and the countless scenic features such as the Cliffs of Moher or Galway Bay, which captivate travelers.
