If you don’t know Sally yet Gaboriit’s now or never to discover the works of one of the greatest contemporary artists of recent years at the Fondation Cartier. For this first monographic exhibition in France, around thirty paintings by the Australian artist are unveiled in the four spaces of the building.
Sally Gabori invites us to fly over his childhood island, the island Bentinck located in the north of Australia, through his series of paintings representing aerial views of the latter. The exhibition introduces us to the artist’s abstract paintings, giving free rein to our interpretation to imagine the artist’s native island.
Behind each of her paintings hides the touching story of the painter. Born on her small island of a hundred inhabitants, Sally Gaborifrom his real name Mirdidingkingathi He orders us Sally Gabori, lived for 23 years with the self-sufficient people of from the pierwithout contact with the outside world.
Everything changed in 1948, when a cyclone ravaged the island and forced the inhabitants to leave the land to settle in Mornington. In their new place of residence, them from the pier are forced by the Presbyterian mission to Mornington to sever all ties with their previous culture and are separated from their children.
It was only at the age of 80 that the artist discovered painting, for which she discovered a great passion. Until her death and in just nine years, Sally Gabori then produced more than 2000 works in homage to her native island to which she had never returned since her sudden departure more than fifty years earlier.
We liked it a lot this very enriching exhibition which mixes both history and art. From room to room, we travel with his monumental abstract works, sometimes colorful and other times less contrasted, while imagining flying over the native lands de Sally Gabori. Through his paintings, the artist continues to bring culture to life from the pier.
So if you love contemporary art and are looking for activities to do in Paris, look no further and go and discover the Fondation Cartier exhibition!
