If a visit to the dentist is between boring and painful, then visiting the Dental Museum in Germany is the exact opposite. It addresses oral health by telling a story regarding how we humans have struggled to understand our teeth over the past few millennia.

There is an extensive collection of dental dentures, dentures, ivory carvings, and other odd dental exhibits; Some of them are 2,500 years old. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to view these exhibits for a long time in the museum located near the city of Leipzig.

“There will not be such groups of this size once more very soon,” said Andreas Heissler, director of the museum, before the opening of a special exhibition this month.

The museum’s permanent exhibition includes various collectors’ vocabulary from hundreds of years ago regarding dentistry, “but this is only 1% of our actual contents,” says Hessler.

The exhibition aims to help the museum make a name for itself. And those in charge of it are looking to find a new site, perhaps far from the state of Saxony in eastern Germany.

“With our globally unique group, we simply don’t feel wanted in Saxony,” said Hessler. The special exhibition should show the enormous treasure we have.”

Hessler compares the size of the pieces he has collected over the decades to the artworks in the vast Louvre Museum in France.

He said, “In our museum, examples of everything famous and important in dentistry can be found,” but the museum itself currently gets almost “zero” support.
