In the workshop, the next generation is there. Guy Roussey, one of the oldest master glassmakers, has just retired following forty-five years of activity. Without a day off. Driven by a passion that he was able to pass on to the younger generation. Before the eyes of hundreds of visitors, marveling at these incandescent balls, he embodied this “glass knowledge”, more than 500 years old, of this glassware labeled “living heritage company”.
glass magic
Because the passage to the workshop of the master glassmakers, faithful to the handmade, is the highlight of the visit. We never tire of the magic of glass and fire. First look for a piece of glass, roll it in colorant, heat it to the right temperature, blow lightly to seek transparency… Using his breath, the glassmaker gives shape to the glass. The breath playing the role of an internal mold to push back, thanks to the rotation of the rod, the glass once morest the walls of the external mould.
Unique pieces
Precise gestures to give birth to unique pieces in front of visitors fascinated by the dexterity of the blowers. All while respecting an ancestral tradition of pressed glass and mouth-blown glass dating back to 1475.
Each year, the Passavant-la-Rochère glass factory welcomes more than 70,000 people. From 1969, the company played the card of opening up to the public by showing the glassblowers. A daring bet that pays off. Then she opened a factory outlet offering products at advantageous prices.
Store and art gallery
Those who push the door of the store can discover the emblematic products; like the Abeille glass, the result of five centuries of know-how. A collection inspired by a travel case in blue morocco, gilded with small irons, on a background of bee seedlings, kept at the Carnavalet museum. A symbol of French savoir-vivre. On the shelves, everyday products that combine elegance and robustness. It is also possible to walk in the Japanese garden with its Zen atmosphere. And to discover the summer exhibition, “Apophénie, the art of seeing things differently” which combines know-how, technology and creativity.
