It was photographed by the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT) and released by ESO on May 20, 2015. Sh2-274, located approximately 1,500 light years away in the constellation Gemini, was discovered in 1955 by astronomer George Abell. Sh2-274 has gas that spreads out in a semicircular arc, and the filament-like gas inside looks like “undulating hair,” which is said to be reminiscent of the head of a monster that appears in Greek mythology.
