It is undoubtedly one of the places still too little known in Belgium: the fortress castle of Fallais, is one of the wonders of Belgium. Nestled in the heart of the Burdinale and Mehaigne Valleys Natural Park, in the province of Liège near Braive, the imposing medieval building stands as a silent witness to the region’s turbulent history. This architectural jewel of the Middle Ages embodies a part of Belgium’s rich cultural and historical heritage and bears witness to the evolution of architecture over the centuries.
With its majestic towers, picturesque moats and imposing walls, the castle is an example of the defensive architecture typical of 13th century forts. Originally erected to serve as a strategic fortress, Fallais has witnessed many battles and intrigues over the centuries. In 1465, Charles the Bold met Louis de Bourbon, Prince Bishop of Liège. In the 17th century, Louis XIV stayed there. The Sun King wanted to have him shot down to thwart the enemy and prevent him from taking a position. A legend says that the women of the village would have changed his mind by offering him waffles from Liège, which the King of France naturally found delicious!
Restored in the 19th century, the castle caught fire in 1937. The fire seriously damaged the structure of the residence. It has been restored to partially accommodate a residence for the elderly.
