Discover the Enchanting Château de la Reynerie in Toulouse: A Hidden Gem Revealed

2023-07-13 05:40:00

The last guided tour, on June 10, was full. Like all the visits to the Château de la Reynerie, in Toulouse, for several weeks and the release, last May, of Maïwenn’s film, Jeanne du Barry, presented at the opening of the Cannes Film Festival 2023, out of competition. “It’s always full, even if people don’t necessarily specify why they want to visit the castle,” remarks Laeticia, at the reception of the Toulouse Tourist Office. His colleague, Sonia, specifies: “Before the film, the visits were not necessarily complete, or else the same day. Today it is booked well in advance. »

Located in the Reynerie district, near the Mirail, this little-known site by Toulouse residents themselves has been owned by the City of Toulouse since 2008. Listed as a historic monument, along with the French garden that surrounds it, the Château de la Reynerie is a pleasure residence built between 1781 and 1783 by order of Count Guillaume du Barry. This one became, a few years earlier, the husband of Jeanne du Barry so that she obtains a title of nobility and can, thus, become the official favorite of Louis XV.

It is also thanks to this marriage that Guillaume du Barry inherited land in the Gers, which he traded for the Reynerie estate in Toulouse, building this second home there, also called “madness”. Accompanied by a guide-lecturer, you can now visit the ground floor, in particular the vestibule and the rotunda salon where Jeanne du Barry has, in all likelihood, never set foot.
