You have certainly already heard of Gustave Flaubert, Virginia Woolf, Guy de Maupassant, Marguerite Duras or even Colette. These authors are well-known, but what do you really know about them? If you find it hard to quote their works or summarize their life, no problem! From now on, François Busnel, producer (and former animator) of La grande bookstore, presents a collection of 90-minute biographies on these virtuosos of the pen, the first episode of which is devoted to Balzac.
This film sets the tone for the issues to come: it is about retracing the life of the writer, from his childhood to his death, to better understand the meaning of his work. For example, with Balzac, the parallel is striking between his characters and his experience. France 5 thus achieves not only a psychoanalysis of the author but also a decryption of the time in which he lived. Only (big) downside: the portrait suffers from serious shortcomings. Here, Balzac appears almost as a feminist, which he was not at all, and his conservatism is barely mentioned.
