Whether abdominal pain or cuts: Minor health problems are not necessarily an emergency. Shortly before the Christmas holidays, the Ministry of Health advertises the care offered by the Maisons médicales.
(BB) – Minor health problems are not immediately a case for the emergency doctor. “If you would go to your family doctor during the day for a cold or stomach ache, then you should head to a Maison médicale in the evening and on public holidays for similar symptoms,” says Dr. Françoise Berthet from the Ministry of Health. In and of itself, it’s very simple advice.
In the Maison médicale in Esch, in Ettelbrück and in the metropolitan station district, general practitioners are on duty following the usual consultation hours of general practitioners. They offer a practical alternative to the overcrowded hospital emergency rooms. The problem, however, is that around a third of the residents do not even know regarding the concept.
A new survey by the Ministry of Health has revealed that the Maisons médicales are often not used because many residents are not even familiar with the concept. With a new information campaign, the Ministry of Health wants to emphasize the offer of the medical contact points.
The opening hours are quite clear:
From Monday to Friday, patients are received between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.
At weekends and on public holidays, the Maisons médicales are open from 8 a.m. to 7 a.m. the next day.
After midnight, patients are advised to call the emergency number 112. Depending on the description of the case, the patient is referred to the doctor on duty at a Maison médicale.

“79 percent of those who took part in the opinion poll were satisfied with the care offered by the Maisons médicales. 73 percent welcomed the short waiting times,” says Minister Lydia Mutsch. With the information campaign, the ministry hopes to increase awareness of the Maisons médicales and thus relieve the burden on the emergency rooms of the hospitals.
The campaign for the Maisons médicales is actually part of a broader program to improve workflow in hospitals. Actually, the emergency rooms are not only overcrowded at night and on public holidays, but also during the day. Further political and financial measures are pending for the hospitals, including more nurses and doctors, better technical equipment and more efficient work processes.
Last but not least, this number shows that the role of general practitioners should be emphasized more: 50 percent of the patients who are cared for in the emergency rooms of the hospitals have minor symptoms. You might have been treated just as well and more quickly in a general practitioner’s practice or in a médicale.
