Many will smile when pronouncing its name, some will push curiosity to go there to see what the charming village of Belgian Gaume, in the province of Luxembourg, hides. Since 1996, the site has been listed as an exceptional heritage site in Wallonia.
Located in the far south of the province and a short hop from the Franco-Belgian border, Montquintin is a picturesque little village perched 320 meters above sea level in the heart of green, hilly landscapes.
Nestled in the heart of lush nature overlooking the Virton region and the Ton valley, this little corner of paradise offers an ideal setting for lovers of calm, tranquility and natural beauty. In the picturesque village set with green hills, the narrow streets and stone houses bear witness to a rich history and a preserved heritage.
In the area as everywhere in the Luxembourg countryside, marked trails for hikers and cyclists are legion.
The feudal castle
The partially ruined medieval castle is one of the jewels of Montquintin which proudly dominates the village. Built in the 12th century, the imposing restored building is accessible to the public. Visitors explore the imposing towers, moats and stroll through the gardens.
The Tithe Farm
Built in local stone in 1765, the three-cell building comprising a main building, a barn and a stable testifies to traditional rural architecture. To protect them from bad weather, the stones were covered with lime. The roof is covered with Roman tiles. After the French Revolution and the end of the privileges, until 1899, the building was reassigned to a school.
The Ferme de la Dîme is now a dependency of the Gaume Museum of Virton. It houses the “Museum of Peasant Life and School of the Past”.
The Church of Saint-Quentin
The religious heritage is not left out. The Saint-Martin church, dating from the 18th century, is an eloquent example of the Baroque of the time. Its elaborate ornaments and richly decorated interior make it a unique place of worship to discover.
The main characteristic of the Romanesque building is the absence of a bell tower. According to legend, it would be to better resist the wind but lightning would be the main cause, the church being located at the top of a hill.
