Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s Uruk Bani Ma’rid protected area has been added to UNESCO’s heritage list. This desert region of Saudi Arabia is rich in biological diversity. With this, the number of Saudi centers that have been included in UNESCO’s heritage list has increased to seven. Ukhuk Bani Maarid was added to the heritage list during the 45th session of UNESCO in Riyadh.
Uruk Bani Ma’rid is in Saudi’s Important Protected Area. One of the world’s largest deserts is the Rub Al Khali, a sea of sand stretching across the southern part of the Arabian subcontinent. It is commonly known as empty quarter. The Uruk Bani Ma’rid Reserve is in the western part of this desert region. Despite being a desert region, the region is biologically rich in desert species.
This is where the evolution of various species of animals in the Arab region, including Saudi Arabia, began. Later, as the region warmed, it gave way to sand dunes. This area is currently a protected forest area in Saudi Arabia. According to current estimates, there are more than 120 indigenous plant species here. The government is doing everything necessary for their existence. Considering all this, Uruk Bani Maarid was added to the UNESCO list.
Prior to this, six centers are currently on the UNESCO heritage list. These are the Al Ahsa Oasis, Mada’in Swalih at Al Ula, Diriyah in Riyadh, Balad in Jeddah, Ha’ilil Stone Inscriptions, and the Hima Region Stone Inscriptions in Najran. The UNESCO conference in Riyadh will end on the 25th of this month.
