Like every year, Angoulême becomes for a few days the epicenter of French cinema. Created in 2008 by Marie-France Brière and Dominique Besnehard, the Francophone Film Festival, which brings together the public and professionals in a good-natured atmosphere, kicks off the return to cinema and allows producers and distributors to take the temperature of halls.

New talents and confirmed directors

And this year, the mood is rather optimistic. With a good start to the year and a clear upturn in attendance in July – 18.38 million admissions, up 25% on last year – under the effect of the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, the outlook is rather reassuring. The public, who acclaimed the festivals throughout the summer, also found their way back to cinemas, including to see French films, as evidenced by the success of Yannickby Quentin Dupieux, released on August 2 and which has already attracted 250,000 spectators.

French production is not to be outdone and will reveal its assets during this event which traditionally combines new talents and confirmed directors. Will thus be presented in preview, this year, The little by Guillaume Nicloux who tackles the delicate subject of surrogate mothers, with Fabrice Luchini and Mara Taquin, The Goldman Trial by Cédric Kahn, who made a strong impression at Cannes, or the new thriller by Yann Gozlan (Black Box), Visions.

In the chapter of biopics, we can discover Flo by Géraldine Danon, which retraces the tragic journey of navigator Florence Arthaud, or even the long-awaited Abbot stone. A life of fightingby Frédéric Tellier, who hopes to repeat the success of Simone. The journey of the century Last year.

A competition that gives pride of place to female directors

The competition, which is geared towards new talent, gives pride of place to women, who directed 7 of the 11 films in the running. We find there Caroline Vignal (Antoinette in the Cevennes), who comes to present his new film Iris and the men with, still, Laure Calamy as headliner, Yolande Moreau with her third film as director The Poet’s Bride. But also a new generation with Katell Quillévéré and his time to loveperiod film bringing together Vincent Lacoste and Anaïs Demoustier, Delphine Deloget who presents her first film Nothing to lose with Virginie Efira or Stéphanie Di Giusto who tells us in Rosaliethe true story of the bearded woman played by Nadia Tereszkiewicz alongside Benoît Magimel.

Two Quebec films, The plunger by Francis Leclerc and Bungalow by Lawrence Côté-Collins and a Belgian-Congolese film, Augur, by rapper Baloji, complete the films in competition which will be decided this year by a jury chaired by actress Laetitia Casta. A tribute to Swiss cinema is also programmed with films by Jean-Luc Godard, Alain Tanner, Claude Goretta, Lionel Baier and Ursula Meier, as well as the discovery of new films by Martin Provost (Bonnard, Pierre and Martha), by Pascal Thomas (The trip in pajamas) and Sébastien Lifshitz (Madame Hofmann).
