Discover the Best Creameries for Sweet Tooths: La Folle Tablée and Fendel & Lilo

Summer has finally arrived and with it, the sweet pleasure of a trip to the dairy bar in nice, warm weather. While some prefer the classics, such as chocolate-dipped soft serve, others want to discover frozen creations that stand out. Here are two original creameries that are real paradises for sweet tooths.

La Folle Tablée: in the land of unicorns

The snack bar The Crazy Table, in Charlesbourg, launched a creamery component in the summer of 2020 to do well in the midst of a pandemic. The success was instantaneous and the beautiful black colored chocolate ice cream cones, made with edible charcoal, took over social networks. But don’t look for black ice this year, it’s not back. “It’s very expensive to produce and not everyone liked it,” explains the owner, Audrey-Anne Pouliot.

La Folle Tablée relies instead on its soft pink vanilla ice cream, which is just as tempting.

We find it in the flagship Unicorn cone, whose soft cream is crowned with a horn painted in gold, pretty ears, in addition to being sprinkled with candy. “It’s very Instagram or Pinterest. People come from afar for that,” notes the owner, who is also a pastry chef by training.

Homemade delicacies

At this restaurant where you eat with your eyes, homemade delicacies and desserts are also highlighted in the sundaes, such as the succulent brownie, the pecan praline or the caramel.

I fell for the strawberry-basil cut. It is garnished with strawberries and fresh basil, topped with a shortbread crumble and a balsamic cream. One word is enough to describe the result: wow! If you’re looking for something less sweet, this is it.

Slushes have also appeared on the menu and they are made with homemade syrup from Quebec fruits (blueberries, strawberries and sea buckthorn).

“Each year, I try to surprise the clientele,” says Audrey-Anne, who does a lot of research and development.

She is proud of her Japanese-inspired creation, the Melon Pan, which resembles an ice cream sandwich. Made with donut dough and covered with cookie dough, it is served warm and topped with soft serve ice cream.

The creamery also offers vegan ice cream from the Quebec company Séva, as well as ice cream for dogs with a homemade peanut butter cookie.

Fendel & Lilo: a bit of Disney in Quebec

On the strength of their success with the counter cheese-cake Fendel & Lilothe two sisters Maïka and Raina Tremblay-Morissette inaugurated a creamery section on their large property in Loretteville in the summer of 2021.

Liloland, as they named it, is colorful with accents of fuchsia and turquoise. The huge terrace laid out behind the ancestral house has a hundred seats. A big fan of Disney, Maïka was inspired by this magical place to create the atmosphere of the business.

“We wanted to offer people a place to break the routine and enter a magical universe where you can fall back into childhood”, image Maïka.

Their flagship product is bubble waffle, a very popular delicacy in Japan. The honeycomb waffle is baked in a mold imported from Asia and topped with ice cream, brownie cubes, crumble and homemade coulis. Little and big kids love it!

“We found it interesting to offer something hot and crispy to accompany ice cream,” explains Maïka.

For those with a less sweet tooth, Liloland has been offering a savory version since this summer. The waffle is topped with fried chicken, coleslaw and spicy Thai sauce.

You must also try their layered cut with ice cream, coulis, crumble and fresh fruit. Here too, everything is homemade.

“We stand out a lot with our recipes. There is practically nothing that is bought commercial. The taste and quality of the products are important”, she concludes.

A second Liloland has been open in Cap-Rouge since last summer.
