Mountainous areas across the country are slowly turning into autumn leaves. Autumn leaves begin to appear when the daily minimum temperature falls below 5 degrees. This year, the first autumn leaves appeared on Seoraksan Mountain on the 30th of last month, two days later than usual. On the 6th, at the request of this newspaper, the National Park Service selected four types of ‘nationwide autumn foliage spots’ where you can feel the atmosphere of fall.
This is a good course to drive first. ‘Seoraksan Hangyeryeong’ is one of the roads that passes through Seoraksan National Park, and you can enjoy a panoramic view of the East Sea and the colorful fall foliage of Inner and South Seorak in the fall. At ‘Jirisan Seongsamjae’, you can tour Suhongru and Iljumun Gate of Cheoneunsa Temple along with the autumn leaves. If you take Wolaksan National Highway No. 36, which runs between Jecheon and Danyang, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Chungjuho Lake and strangely shaped rocks harmonized with autumn foliage while passing through the Oksunbong and Gudambong areas. ‘Mudeungsan Pungamje’ is a path that leads to Pungamje through the Gasa Literary Area and Gwangju Lake, allowing you to capture the history and culture of the region at a glance.

Second, it is a good road to walk. Three locations were selected for each of the ‘urban type’ and ‘mountain type’ types. ‘Bukhansan Uiryeong-gil’, which is considered an urban walking course, is a hill at the end of the Hanbuk vein and the center of Bukhansan National Park, and is an ecological passage that connects the biosphere of Gyeonggi-do and Seoul. You can feel the autumn atmosphere in the city. ‘Mudeungsan Rabbit Light’ starts from Wonhyo Square and is a flat trail where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Gwangju cityscape while walking along a tunnel of red-colored autumn leaves. If you walk slowly along the ‘Chiaksan Hwangjangmok Forest Trail’, which is made up entirely of pine trees, while listening to the calm sound of water in the valley and the sounds of wind and birds, you will soon reach Guryongsa Temple at the end of the Hwangjangmok Forest Trail and see 200-year-old ginkgo trees turning yellow.
The third is a mountain-type walking course. ‘Jirisan Duryu Ecological Trail’ is a horizontal trail where you can enjoy cool valley water and autumn leaves. It is a good place to experience fall with children as it has Jungsanri Ecological Experience Center. ‘Juwangsan Juwang Valley’ is a low-lying trail at the entrance to Juwangsan National Park, where you can enjoy autumn and geopark attractions such as Sirubong Peak and the water fountain at the same time. ‘Odaesan Seonjae-gil’ is a path that connects Woljeongsa Temple, the entrance to Odaesan National Park, to Sangwonsa Temple. The slope is gentle and the scenery is good, so you can enjoy the fresh autumn breeze with your whole body while walking leisurely.
Lastly, it is a course of famous humanities and temples with beautiful fall foliage. ‘Juwangsan Jusanji’ is an old reservoir whose construction began in 1720 during the reign of King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty. It is famous for its particularly beautiful scenery combined with old willows that are 150 years old. ‘Odaesan Woljeongsa Temple’ is close to the fir forest, so you can experience temple culture and the autumn forest path at the same time. The Odaesan Cultural Festival will also be held from the 13th to the 15th of this month, allowing you to enjoy a wealth of things to see. If you walk along the trail to ‘Gyeongju Yongdamjeong’, you can see well-preserved cultural relics in Namsan, Gyeongju, such as the stone seated Buddha of Samneung Valley and the Seongak Six Buddhas.

An official from the National Park Service advised, “Because the sunset is early in the fall, it is best to check the sunset time before going out to see the fall foliage, and start descending before 2 p.m. to be safe.”
