Alpine summer in the Ausseerland
Often only the imposing mountain peaks of the northern Limestone Alps tower above the numerous alpine pastures of the Ausseerland. An unbelievable feeling of freedom spreads at the sight of the idyllic alpine pastures. A life away from the hustle and bustle still seems possible here. But it is only through hard work and diligence that the Alpine dairymen and women, the guardians and the farmers of nature can wrest the alpine pastures to keep them as grazing land for the cattle. Marianne Gruber has been a dairymaid at the Viebergalm for more than 20 years. She takes care of the dairy cows and produces “Steirerkas” according to old tradition, a sour milk cheese that was already made in Celtic times. As a keeper, 78-year-old Gerlinde Polz takes care of more than 60 cows on the Goseritzalm. She has spent the summer months on the alp since she was very young. Every day she keeps an eye on the animals entrusted to her, repairs fences and collects berries and herbs. She always ends her evenings at sunset on the bench in front of her hut. Franz Bergler, Styria’s alpine inspector, has been the keeper of the Styrian alpine pastures for more than 30 years. He tries to meet the different requirements – often as a mediator – because it is important to bring everyone under one roof, from the cow to the tourist. Every year he hikes from alp to alp to get an impression. Even as a little boy he fell in love with the alpine pastures. His passion belongs to the knowledge of traditional herbalism.
