The celebration in the Capitol courtyard included a live band, some of Tallahassee’s iconic restaurants and lessons on the city’s history.

The theme for the celebration is “ambitious from the beginning.”

“We as a community are ambitious to create, ambitious to innovate, educate, were always regarding growing, inspiring and achieving,” says Visit Tallahassee’s Kerri Post.

Post has been a Tallahassee resident for 25 years, and she says she has seen Tallahassee evolve into a community that she is proud to call home.

She says when she first moved here, Tallahassee’s unique districts, like MIdtown and College Town hadn’t yet been created.

“It’s wonderful to see Tallahassee growing in all these different parts of the community,” Post says.

Post also praised the legislature for its recognition of Tallahassee as more than just the where the Capitol building sits “but we as a community are Florida’s capital.”

Lawmakers in the House and Senate passed resolutions recognizing the bicentennial. Tallahassee Democratic Representative Allison Tant, says this is a monumental year for Tallahassee, but as she presented the resolution from Florida’s historic Capitol building she said it was also a moment of personal importance for her.

“We are the first legislative body to meet in this chamber to conduct the people’s business since 1977. And my husband, Barry Richard was a member, the last class of the legislatures to conduct in this very body,” Tant said.

About two hundred years ago, the legislature appointed two people to find a place for Florida’s new capital. They rode on horseback from St. Augustine and Pensacola—meeting in the middle on land now known as Tallahassee.
