The Horsehead Nebula is a famous dark nebula located approximately 1,375 light-years away in the constellation Orion, and was named because the shape of the cloud in the lower left corner of the image resembles a horse’s head.
A dark nebula is a celestial body with a high density of gas and dust. It is called a “dark” nebula because the dust blocks the visible light emitted by the celestial bodies on the other side, making the area appear dark from Earth. In the direction of the constellation Orion, there is a vast star-forming region called the Orion Molecular Cloud, of which the Horsehead Nebula is a part.
The image at the beginning was released on November 7, 2023, as one of the first full-color images from ESA’s Euclid Space Telescope mission, which was launched in July 2023.
