Discover La Queue de Vache: A Hidden Gem for Classic Gastronomy in Brussels

There was a time when the working-class neighborhoods of the capital were full of nice little restaurants frequented mainly by local customers. They closed down one following another as their regulars got older or moved out of town. Some nevertheless resist but are unequally distributed. Municipalities such as Uccle or Ixelles are overwhelmed by a plethoric supply, while the west of the capital is much less rich.

Fortunately, islands of quality gastronomy still exist. This is the case of La Queue de vache, located in a residential area of Molenbeek. Owned by Patrick De Koster, who owns other brands nearby such as Le Chalet or La Piscine, the establishment works on word of mouth which wins the loyalty of lovers of sure values.

The room is very classic but comfortable. Ideal for a clientele fond of habits. A pleasant covered terrace also allows you to sit down outside even when the weather is unpredictable.

In the kitchen, nothing but classic and that’s what pleases. The excellent value for money, without forgetting the generous plates, characterizes the place. Every day, a lunch at 22 euros (starter-main course-dessert) delights customers who can settle for a Cesar salad (19 euros) or a simple spaghetti Bolognese (15 euros).

A local menu offers, among other things, American fries plain or prepared a la minute (24 euros), beef tenderloin (25 euros) or the real homemade chicken vol-au-vent (23 euros).

Mussels are worthily represented with a 1kg200 saucepan from 26 euros according to different preparations (marinières, white wine, garlic, pastis…). If you don’t know which flavor to choose, why not opt for the trio of mussels (3×400 grams) at 26 euros?

For bigger appetites, there is the menu of the month at 45 euros or the lobster with a beautiful view (65 euros).

As its name might suggest, La Queue de vache offers a choice of matured meats: Argentinian cubroll (38 euros), black angus dry aged ribeye (40 euros) or Irish bone-in rib of 85 cm (79 euros for two people).

On the cellar side, there are also great classics such as Peybonhomme, the timeless Saint-Amour, Côtes du Rhône and other Pinot Noir.

A mention for the staff, experienced and good advice, who know most of the regulars by name.

Here is an address that you can push open the door with confidence, sure to eat well for a moderate bill.
