The cat-only island

The island’s inhabitants are cats that were brought to control rodents on ships and fishing boats in the past. After World War II, Oshima was reduced to cats and a few humans as the islanders moved to other cities in search of work. Then the cats proliferated. Today there are more than twice as many cats as residents. Hundreds of tourists visit the island every day to see this army of cats.

A male-only island

Women are denied entry to Okinoshima Island, located off the Munakata coast of Fukuoka. Only men have access to the island. Not everyone can go there either. Only 200 men are allowed to participate in the annual festival there. Men arriving on the island must strip off their clothes and bathe naked in the sea to perform a purification ceremony, which is believed to cleanse their souls. Two of Japan’s oldest historical texts, the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki, mention Okinoshima. The island is considered very sacred by the local Munataka tribe. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the island is said to have been a trading post between the Korean Islands and China from the 4th to the 9th century. Shinto God is worshiped on this island. Shinto is an ancient religion with Japanese roots. It is said that women are denied entry to the island due to the ritual impurity of menstruation.
