O iPad works great with external keyboards. It’s no surprise that Apple itself offers dedicated options, such as Smart Keyboardo Smart Keyboard Folioo Magic Keyboard and the Magic Keyboard Folio.
Despite this, these devices have, of course, a virtual keyboard — for those times when you don’t want or need to attach an external option. To make things even easier, it is possible to use this native virtual keyboard not only in one way, but also in other ways.
Get to know them and learn how to activate them! ⌨️
Floating keyboard
The floating keyboard keeps it small (like an iPhone) and allows you to move it anywhere on the screen.
To activate it, hold down your finger on the key represented by a keyboard and slide your finger to “Floating”. When you want to return it to its normal size, separate your fingers (make a pinch gesture, opening) on the floating version.
Split keyboard
There is also the split keyboard, which allows you to type in a more ergonomic way while holding the iPad with both hands.
To activate it, you must first go to Settings » General » Keyboard and activate “Split Keyboard”. You can also do this by keeping your finger pressed on the icon represented by a globe or a smile on the keyboard, going to “Keyboard Settings” and selecting “Split Keyboard”.
Then, when you want to divide it, hold down the key represented by a keyboard and slide your finger to the “Divide” option. To merge it, repeat the same process and choose “Combine”.
Note, however, that this mode is only available on certain tablet models:
- iPads (5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th generations)
- iPad Air (3rd generation)
- iPad mini (5th and 6th generations)
- iPads Pro (9,7″ e 10,5″)
